All Children’s Hospital &
Medical Office Building
St. Petersburg, FL
Paul J. Ford and Company designed the ten-story, 670,000
square foot All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. This hospital has a 308 bed capacity housing emergency, radiology, oncology, and surgical services. As part of its emergency services, the structure was required to support an elevated roof top heliport pad.
The structural system for this hospital consists of cast-in-place concrete vertical circulation cores and moment frames supported on deep foundations. In order to accommodate a loading dock area in the basement, tall cantilevered concrete retaining walls were constructed around the perimeter. Some of the challenges on this project included curved, cantilevered concrete canopies, a special effect steel canopy and two-story atriums. With its hurricane-resistant design, the facility includes a new central energy plant allowing the hospital to run without outside power for up to 21 days.
Connected by a pedestrian bridge to the hospital is a seven-story, 220,000 square foot, steel framed medical office building.
